Review | Benefit They're Real! Push-Up Liner

Hi guys! Today I'm going to write a quick review of the new Benefit's They're Real! Push-Up Liner. Sorry for the late update of this new gel-pen liner that everybody is talking about and it just launched in Malaysia a week ago (FYI). I have been so crazy busy at work and I have literally no time to do my makeup because I'm always rushing out the door to work in the morning, hence why the delay of the review. I mean, I am blogging this post from my iPhone so..that's how busy I get (just saying!).

BUT I still want to do this review post for those of you who are curious about this product, since many people have been asking me about it ever since I posted a picture of the pen gel liner on my Instagram when I first got it on its' first day of launching last week. I was, like the rest of you who haven't tried out this gel liner, very skeptical about this particular product, because I have been using liquid eyeliner pen since the very first day I learned how to do my makeup. I never use anything else but a liquid pen liner to do my winged eye liner. I am never a fan of using gel liner or pencil liner because I either suck at using them, or I personally think they could not give me the perfect winged lines that a liquid pen liner could. I've tried em', but failed miserably.
Winged or cat-eyed liner is my favorite and I will not leave the house without my winged eyes, EVER. So when I saw many beauty gurus in YouTube raving about this newbie from Benefit, I know I have to get it and try it out regardless.

So let's get into the product description claimed by Benefit. It's claimed to be the FIRST EVER lash-hugging gel liner in a pen! This matte black gel formula won’t smudge, budge or dry out, and the innovative soft AccuFlex™ Tip hugs your lashline from corner to corner. The closer the line, the bigger the eye!

91% said it was longwearing*
81% said it was waterproof*
88% said it hugged the lashline*
84% said eyes looked visibly larger*
*Results observed in a consumer panel survey on 32 women after 2 weeks

>> Yes, I TOTALLY copy-pasted this from Benefit's official website.

Now let's get into my experience of using the Push-Up Liner. The first time I used it, I thought
this product was a nightmare, just like other gel liners I've tried. But I think the whole idea of it in a pen form is brilliant, consider I do not have to use a liner brush and dig into a pot of gel liner that may dry up in a short period of time, then clean the liner brush every now and then along with my other brushes, meh! The sales person from my Benefit store suggested that I should just twist the click one time so I can get enough of product to do a perfect thin line on my lash line and also the flick on the outer corner of my eye. Maybe because it was still new and I had to keep twisting the cap for a few clicks to push out the product from its AccuFlex™ Tip so I ended up pushing too much of product out and when I was lining my lash lines, I got flaky gel liner all over my lash line and it wasn't a pleasant smooth application as well. I do agree the product is matte black and SUPER waterproof, hence I had a hard time removing the mistakes I've made from the liner. I didn't like it at all on my first-time experience, to be honest.

So I kinda abandoned it for a week and because I am more familiar and quicker using my usual liquid pen liner so I've been using that since I am always rushing out in the morning. This morning I wasn't in a rush so I thought of giving this Push-Up Liner another go. To my surprise, I actually nailed it and finally mastered the product. The picture below was taken from this morning, as you can see it is very matte and very black, which is what I love. The flicks on the outer corner are (almost!) perfect, if only I could just winged it like a pro without touch-ups from concealer to make the sharp edge as shown below. BUT, practice makes perfect right?

As a conclusion, I think it is a brilliant innovation and idea of creating a gel liner in PEN form, which is very easy to carry around instead of having a liner brush with a heavy pot of gel liner (which I think is kinda messy), and also the AccuFlex™ Tip really does what it claimed - lash- hugging and very easy to create the cat-eyed flicks / winged eye liner. I do have a love-hate-relationship with this product though, I don't hate it but I wouldn't say it's my holy grail because I still prefer my liquid liners. However, I love how it is waterproof and very matte in black, probably the only one I love compared to the others waterproof liners in the market. In my opinion, I reckon you just need a little more time to be patient, and practice using this gel-liner so create your perfect liner. No harm trying out this product so I think it's totally worth it for you to hit the store now and get it! Oh, and you do not have to go out and get their make-up removal that launched along with their They're Real! line to get this thing off. I just use a makeup removal oil or wipes and they can remove the liners as effectively.

Let me know if you would like to see a video review on how I apply using the Push-Up Liner or removing it, Benefit They're Real Push-Up Liner is now available in Malaysia! Get yours now for RM100 from your local Benefit stores or Sephora to try it out. xx
